Coca acreage down, for now

The UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has revealed that the total area under coca cultivation in Colombia fell by 7% in 2004 to 80,000 hectares from the previous year. This figure was below the government's target of 85,000 ha and a marked contrast to a preliminary estimate put forward in March by the US's Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), which claimed that the acreage under coca cultivation remained constant last year.
